DEXA is the abbreviation for Dual Energy X-ray Absortiometry. This type of exam is a
radiological procedure and measures the density of bone from multiple sites (wrist, lumbar spine and
hip). It is an easy screening test for Osteoporosis, and can help predict the patient's chance of
developing the disease. Among patients with osteoporosis, DEXA scanning is helpful to measure the
effects of treatment of the disease.
DEXA scan is indicated for all post menopausal women under age 60 who have multiple risks
for osteoporosis such as: small body frame, low calcium intake, sedentary lifestyle or smoking. It
was also recommended for all women over age 65 regardless of additional risk factor, all post menopausal
who develop fractures, plus men and women who have taken anti-seizure medications or Prednisone for
prolonged period of time.
No, DEXA scanning is very simple and painless.
Patients should wear comfortable loose clothing without zippers. It is not necessary
to undress for the scan. All routine daily medications can be taken the day of the test; however,
do not take Calcium supplements on the day of the test.
Your provider will be happy to discuss whether you should have a DEXA scan at your next
appointment.
